Kostroma Region

Area – 60.2 thousand km². Population – 766.4 thousand people, urban population makes 508 thousand people, rural - 258 thousand people. The Region comprises 12 cities, 13 urban-type settlements. Extension of Kostroma Region from the north to the south – 260 km, from west to the east makes 420 km.


Administrative center is Kostroma city. It is situated in the south-west part of Kostroma Region at the intersection of the Volga and Kostroma rivers, which is 330 km to the north-east away from Moscow. Large cities are: Buj, Manturovo, Sharia, Nerekhta, Galitch. The Region was established on August 13th, 1944. Is a part of Central Federal district.


Kostroma is one of the famous and popular tourist routes in the Russian Federation. Kostroma history and its uniqueness always attracted a lot of tourists. This city is popular for its places of interest. Let's have a look at the east: Ipatievskiy monastery, Museum of Wooden Architecture, Trade rows, and many other sights. The center preserved the peculiarity of the Russian history. By the way, the "Spanish fan", urban plan of site building which was adopted by Ekaterina II in 1767, had foreseen a simple access to the city center and to many socially significant places – libraries, museums, theaters and others. There is a river port on the Volga river in Kostroma. There is the automatic telephone communication with all Region districts.

Kostroma Region borders Vologda Region on the north, and Ivanovo and Nizhny Novgorod Regions on the south. It boarders as well the Yaroslavl Region on the west and Kirov Region on the east.

More than 80 nationalities reside in Kostroma Region, the major part are the Russians (96.3%). The population size is 717.5 thousand inhabitants. The working-age population makes 59.2%, 17.7% is made by younger population, 23.1% is covered by that of the older one. The urban population constitutes 508.8 thousand people, while the urban constitute 257.6 thousand people. The population density is 11.9 people per m². Following the data of 2005, the average age is 37.8 years.


Kostroma Region is beneficially located in terms of geography. It is crossed by transit railway roads, water ways and highways. The railroads density makes 18.3 km per 1000 km², the hard-surface roads constitute 98.2 km per 1000 km².


Kostroma Region is a quite a perspective Region due to extensive natural resources, infrastructure development, economy revival, formation of new staff.
Due to geological excavations Kostroma Region is provided by information on clay and sandy resources to produce red brick and clayite, sand-and gravel compounds, mortar sands. The mineral fields of such minerals as phosphorites, oils shale, glass-making and molding sands, chalkstones, turf are available in this Region. Mineral resources are developed by 42 mineral users on 65 mine fields.
Kostroma Region is the model of the Russian Federation landscape. There are a lot of unique historical monuments in the Region which make it very attractive for tourism and foreigners.

Along with general (traditional in this field) mineral resources and mineral-raw base emerged on the territory of Kostroma Region, there is a possibility that such minerals as diamonds, oil, zircon, titanium, etc. can be found in industrial scale.
